MASJID-E-QUBA, ITS HISTORY AND STRUCTURE

MASJID-E-QUBA, ITS HISTORY AND STRUCTURE

Masjid-e-Quba, to the south of Madina is the second largest and prestigious masjid in Madina city after the Masji-e-Nabwi (Prophet’s Mosque), but claims the first place owing to its significance in history of Islam having been built in the first year of the Islamic calendar.
Masjid-e-Quba witnesses an arrival of worshippers and visitors throughout the whole year, but the numbers increases in the holy month of Ramadan. Large amount of gatherings can be observed in the masjid’s precincts especially in the starting and early hours of the morning.

Quba Mosque was initially a well surrounded by a village named after it. It was actually inhabited by the tribe of Banu Amr bin Auf. On his way to Madina, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) visited the home of Banu Amr Bin Auf and built a masjid in the area which He named Quba.
Historical references show that the our beloved Prophet (PBUH) and his Companions built the masjid to the Southwest of Madina, 3 km away from the Masjid-e-Nabwi (Prophet’s Mosque) in the first year of the Hijri or Islamic calendar.
The masjid contained a well that belonged to Abu Ayyub Al-Ansari (may ALLAH be pleased with him). The unique and prestigious characteristics of Quba Masjid compared to other mosques are cited in this Hadees narrated by our Prophet (PBUH):

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) said:

“He who purifies himself at his home and comes to Masjid Quba and offers two rakats therein, will be rewarded the reward of an Umrah (lesser pilgrimage).” [Sunan ibn Majah]

In the past centuries, Muslims have accorded Majid-e-Quba much importance and attention. It was renovated by many caliphs of the period. The third Caliph

Uthmaan ibn Affan (may ALLAH be pleased with him) done the first renovations of Quba mosque. In modern era, the Saudi government has taken charge of the masjid by endowing the responsibility to the Ministry of Hajj Affairs that made further renovations and additional structures to the original design. The modern day Masjid-e-Quba is an architectural feat equipped with the latest and newest facilities whilst maintaining its Islamic identity. The masjid has been expanded to accommodate more than twenty thousand worshipers.

In the year of 1984, the late King Fahd bin Abdulaziz laid the foundation stone for the historic expansion of the Masjid-e-Quba. The Masjid was designed with an internal courtyard with several entrances. The north section was reserved for only women worshippers. The majid now has four minarets and fifty six (56) domes and adjoined to it is the residence of muezzins and Imams, lodging, a library, for the guards in an area of 112 square meters. The masjid has 7 main entrances and 12 additional ones and 42 units for ablution (wuzu).
The masjid is cooled by three central units each with ability and capacity of one million and eighty thousand thermal units. Masjid-e-Quba is a unique landmark and its white structure can be clearly seen from a distance.
